Working together to achieve our goals

Year 2, Care – Autumn 1

Mrs Baker/Mrs Lockley

It only seems two minutes ago since we all started school in Reception, but here we are in Year 2, our final year in Key Stage 1. Time flies! It promises to be a fantastic year and we’re lucky to have 2 teachers, Mrs Baker and Mrs Lockley as well as our HLTA, Mrs Khan. This term we are also joined by student teacher, Mr Griffiths.

We are now well into our Year 2 Power Maths books. We absolutely loved the challenge of Power Maths when we were in Year 1 so we can’t wait to progress through the Year 2 books. We have been securing our understanding of place value, ordering and comparing 2-digit numbers and look forward to moving onto adding and subtracting these larger numbers. We are becoming fluent mathematicians, able to reason and problem solve.

We continue to work on our maths Weekly Workout and Big Maths. It’s very important that we all learn our 2s, 5s and 10 x tables and we can all practice these on TT Rockstars at school as well as at home.

We might have all taken our phonics screening last year but at Bradshaw, we all make sure that we complete the Read Write Inc Phonics Scheme. We will miss going up to our little phonics groups every morning but we know that when we do we will be confident readers and writers.

Those of us who have completed the phonics scheme are currently looking at Anthony Browne’s “The Tunnel” book in their writing lesson. Using the Mantle of the Expert approach, we have become a team of newspaper reporters, writing news reports and character descriptions.

We have all taken our first Star Reading test on the chromebooks and we are now enjoying taking book tests on are reading books. We have started the Year 2, Red Ted Scheme and try to read with an adult for 20 minutes every day.

We now learn 15 KS1 spellings each week for our Big Spell. These spellings are always put on Spellodrome where, if we choose to, we can play different word games that will help us remember the spellings.

Our topic is “Towers, Tunnels and Turrets” and we can’t wait for our trip to Conisbrough Castle. In the meantime we are using the Mantle of the Experts approach to learning about castles by creating a castle context within the classroom.

Mrs Lockley is really enjoying teaching us science this year. We are investigating different materials and our scientific vocabulary is growing week by week. We will be looking at materials to build a strong model castle later in the term and we have been wondering what types of materials would sink or float in the moat.

Art and DT

We have been designing towers and looking at ways to reinforce structures in order to make them stable. We will be taking our sketch books on our trip and have already made sketches of parts of castles. We will look at the work of Paul Klee, how he used shapes and symmetry and creating our own castle picture using oil pastels.

Each week we listen and appraise a new piece of music and the song we are learning is Hands, Heart, Feet. We are concentrating on copying and composing our own rhythms this term. We will learn to play these rhythms on the recorder, creating fanfares that could possibly be heard to communicate, in topic, between different castles.
